Turning Drab to “Draper”

Men's hair has remained relatively stagnant with only an ever-so-slight variation of faux-hawk dominating current trends for the past couple years.

Don't get me wrong.... I think this genericized cut has definitely updated some brush-cut compelled gents. However, with the faux-hawk fading out, I am very excited with the direction that men's hair is heading.

In my opinion, one particular television show, Mad Men, is the catalyst bringing sophisication back this spring. Add a great smooth cut and the shine of Brylcream, then pour me an Old Fashion, straight-up, please!

With a sizable market share focused on mens’ grooming, more and more urban men seem to be embracing their inner style maven. Mad Men reminds us that looking “the” part is just as important as the cut-of-cloth and social grace. With a rejuvenation of the straight shave and clean-cut coiffe taming every stray hair, I predict that more couples will be brokering bathroom rights in the coming months.

Yummy! Let's thicken this plot, I say.

My Scoop on Hair Trends for Spring 2010

Take note!

The hipster culture, those groups you love to hate, but wish you were a part of, have inspired two trends for long locks essentials in spring 2010. The "disheveled couffe" fuses the current trend towards more movement in the hair to the counter culture of the street.

With wash and wear simplicity, you can create long hair trend #1, the loose side braid to rev up your wow factor. Over the past year and a half, the re-introduction of the braid has increased to the point that it should be a style essential in every fashionista's bag of tricks. Why do I love the re-branded side braid so much - because it has become undone by an absence of structure that boosts its sex appeal.

A look I gravitate towards myself is the 'Hipster High Bun', as coined by a client of mine, which modifies to a million different looks and easily adapts from day to night. Just add a hair accessory or jewel to upscale your look with a thrown-together elegance and voila, it's perfect for the gallery opening this weekend.

What I love most is the simplicity, which any Jane can create. And, they have huge impact when done right.
